More than seventy years after his death, the name of Florenz Ziegfeld still 
embodies(體現) Broadway(百老匯) at its most glamorous(光榮). His Follies remain 
legendary(傳奇的), and his Show Boat is still one of the most beloved musicals
(音樂劇) of all time. With his gift for publicity(廣告宣傳), he earned his 
reputation as one of the greatest showmen the theater will ever know. 
Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. was born on March 21, 1869, in Chicago, Illinois. 
Anna Held, an outstanding actress Ziegfeld met in London in 1896, inspired(啟發) 
him to create the follies, a musical revue(歌舞劇) with beautiful chorus girls, 
pageantry(華麗的場面), and comedy. The first of these shows opened at the New
York Theatre in July 1907. Featuring a chorus line of fifty beauties, starring 
Anna Held, the show was titled the Follies of 1907. Soon known as the "Ziegfeld 
Follies," the revue was updated yearly until the Depression. 
Ziegfeld and Held worked together to produce a string of shows and successful 
stage musicals. Productions such as Miss Innocence showed Held's good looks and 
magnetic personality. Talented comedians, playwrights and stage designers 
gathered in Ziegfeld's work group. With his unique taste and their creativity, 
Broadway musicals rose to be one of the typical stage formats(形式) in the 20th 
century.
